The issue was that I had a couple of devices that I wanted to use in that room that only supported wifi, so I could either put up with slow connections, or set up a mobile hotspot. Fortunately, I had a box of ethernet cable, a crimper, and enough know-how to wire that room, so I have reliable gigabit in that corner where I seem to pick up all my neighbors’ signals more than my own. The use case is that I have really crappy wifi in my home office. This is also the second time I’ve run into this issue (after a laptop format), so if future-me is looking this post up, here’s how to get this working again. This is probably a really niche issue, but I couldn’t find a clean answer for it on Google.
